A label problem is an identification problem that needs a defined workplace response. Staff should not identify an unknown cleaner by smell, colour or a colleague’s guess. The product must be handled according to the site’s chemical procedures and the person’s training.
Stop the informal workaround
Do not place a handwritten nickname on an uncertain container and return it to routine use. Notify the responsible supervisor and follow the procedure for restricting use while the product identity is clarified.
Keep the original container and any available delivery or stock record intact. Those records may help the supplier or workplace lead establish what was received, but they do not justify untrained handling of a damaged container.
Record what is known
Use a short issue record:
- Location and container description.
- Readable product or supplier information.
- Date the problem was noticed.
- Relevant receiving or stock reference.
- Person notified and temporary control applied.
- Resolution and return-to-use authorisation.
Avoid photographing or moving the item if doing so would conflict with the site’s safety procedure. Report a damaged or leaking package through the appropriate incident route rather than treating it only as a printing issue.
Obtain the correct information
The responsible person should confirm the product identity and the applicable labelling requirements before replacing information. Workplace labels and supplier labels have specific roles; a generic warning copied from another product is not an adequate substitute.
The CCOHS WHMIS label guidance explains the wider framework and notes that workplace requirements depend on jurisdiction. Use the current applicable rules and workplace programme for the actual response.
Prevent repeat problems
Review whether labels are being damaged during storage, cleaning or normal handling. Change the process through the responsible workplace lead rather than creating an unofficial identification system.
Connect the issue to the delivery checklist and SDS register. For an Aspin product, contact the team with the available identifying details to request the appropriate product information.
