ASPIN CLEANING GUIDES / Product Documentation

Handing Over a Chemical Task to a New Employee

Make a chemical-task handover practical: identify the product, locate the instructions and demonstrate the approved workflow. Keep it within the workplace training programme.

A new employee needs more than a container name and a quick instruction to “use this.” A task handover should connect the product to the approved work, the relevant documents and the person to contact when something is unclear.

Confirm the employee’s scope

Identify the tasks the employee has been trained and authorised to perform. Keep restricted equipment work and unfamiliar chemical handling outside that scope. This handover checklist supports the workplace programme; it does not replace required WHMIS education or task-specific training.

The CCOHS general WHMIS guidance distinguishes product information from the safe work procedures needed for a particular workplace. Use that distinction when preparing the local handover.

Walk through a real task

At the appropriate work location, show the employee how to identify the approved product and locate its current instructions and SDS. Explain the task boundary, tools and workplace procedures. Do not use an unlabelled demonstration container as a shortcut.

Ask the employee to explain the sequence back in their own words and demonstrate the authorised actions under supervision. This reveals gaps that a yes-or-no question may miss.

Include the exception route

Practise what the employee should do if the expected product is missing, the label is unreadable or the surface differs from the task sheet. The correct response may be to pause and ask the supervisor, not to improvise with another cleaner.

Record:

  • Task and product covered.
  • Instruction version used.
  • Demonstration and supervised practice completed.
  • Questions or limitations identified.
  • Trainer, employee and follow-up date.

Check the handover after normal use

Arrange a brief follow-up during the employee’s first relevant shifts. Ask what was difficult to locate or interpret and correct the process or training gap. Keep changes with the active task instruction so later employees receive the same guidance.

Use the SDS register and product label comparison to organise information. For questions about Aspin products, use the document centre and supplier support alongside the workplace’s training responsibilities.
