ASPIN CLEANING GUIDES / Team & Process

Measuring Waste in a Cleaning Programme

Separate rework, unused solution, damaged supplies and packaging so waste-reduction efforts target a specific, measurable problem.

“Reduce waste” becomes actionable when the team names the waste being measured. Rewashing dishes, discarding unused prepared solution and receiving damaged containers have different causes and different owners. Combining them into one vague score makes improvement difficult.

Choose one category for the first review. Define the unit, reporting period and method of recording it. Use existing task and product instructions throughout; reducing waste does not justify extending storage or use beyond those instructions.

Start with a small baseline

For rework, count repeat tasks or racks and note the reason observed. For damaged supplies, record the product, quantity and point at which the damage was discovered. For prepared solution, use the site's approved preparation and handling process and record only measurements staff can obtain safely.

Keep unusual events visible. A one-time stock clear-out should not be mistaken for the normal weekly pattern.

Select a controllable change

Match the change to the observation. Repeated unused solution might prompt a review of task planning and approved preparation quantities. Delivery damage might need a receiving-process or supplier discussion. Rewash can require loading, equipment or process investigation.

Avoid setting a blanket reduction target before understanding why the material is being used or discarded. Some disposal is required by product instructions or the workplace process and should not be discouraged.

Compare the same work

Measure the next period using the same definitions and record workload changes. In a hypothetical example, reducing rewash from 12 out of 200 racks to 6 out of 200 changes the rate from 6% to 3%. Comparing raw counts without the total workload would tell a less complete story.

Document the successful change and check that it did not create another problem, such as more labour or incomplete task outcomes. For waste handling and disposal, follow the actual product information and site requirements rather than general online advice.

The rewash tracking guide and consumption log guide provide focused starting points for two common measurement tasks.
